3M (MMM) — Overview

3M Company (NYSE: MMM) is one of the world’s most diversified industrial companies, manufacturing over 60,000 products across electronics, healthcare, safety, and consumer segments from its St. Paul, Minnesota headquarters. Q1 2026 adjusted EPS of $2.14 beat the $2.02 consensus, and CEO William Brown guided for FY26 adjusted EPS of $8.50–$8.70 with further margin expansion. The operational business is executing well — adjusted operating margin expanded 140 basis points to 21.1%. The persistent problem is the wide gap between GAAP and adjusted earnings, driven by PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) litigation that consumed $3.5 billion in cash payments in 2025. Major PFAS settlements were largely completed in 2025, making future cash obligations more predictable, but JPMorgan downgraded the stock citing lingering valuation risks from residual litigation. 3M has raised its dividend for 67 consecutive years — one of the longest streaks of any Dow component.
