The SEC has cleared the way for the first triple-leveraged crypto exchange-traded products in the U.S., approving a Cboe BZX rule change that lets Volatility Shares list six new 3x daily ETPs tracking Bitcoin, Ether, gold, silver, oil, and natural gas. The approval lands in the same week Bitcoin is holding just under $85,000 after briefly topping $87,000 — a sign that both the regulatory and price backdrop for crypto keep tilting more constructive heading into the fourth quarter.
SEC Approves First 3x Leveraged Bitcoin and Ether ETPs
A Cboe BZX rule change opens the door to triple-leveraged, futures-based crypto products from Volatility Shares — while spot Bitcoin itself holds near $85,000.
SEC Clears Cboe BZX to List Triple-Leveraged Crypto ETPs
The SEC this week approved a rule change allowing Cboe BZX to list six new futures-based exchange-traded products from Volatility Shares, each designed to deliver roughly three times the daily price movement of its underlying asset: Bitcoin, Ether, gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas. The products build on Volatility Shares’ existing 2x leveraged crypto funds, BITX (Bitcoin) and ETHU (Ether), which have already attracted meaningful trading volume from investors seeking amplified, short-term exposure. Because the new ETPs get their leverage through futures contracts rather than direct crypto holdings, they’re structured as daily-rebalancing trading vehicles rather than long-term buy-and-hold positions — compounding effects mean returns over periods longer than a single day can diverge meaningfully from 3x the underlying asset’s move. Final Form S-1 registration statements still need to go effective before any of the six products can actually begin trading, so there’s a bit more runway before investors can access them.
Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas called it a “big win for VolatilityShares,” noting the approval came through under the Securities Act of 1933. Fellow ETF analyst Nate Geraci pointed to the bigger-picture shift in regulatory posture: just three years ago the SEC was in active litigation with Grayscale over whether a spot Bitcoin ETF could be approved at all — now the agency is clearing triple-leveraged crypto products for listing.
Bitcoin Holds Near $85K After Topping $87K
Bitcoin was trading around $84,860 as of this week, little changed over the prior 24 hours after briefly surpassing $87,000 earlier in the week. That keeps BTC consolidating in the same range our October 2 coverage flagged, when Bitcoin first pushed back above $85,000 on a wave of short covering, a nine-session ETF inflow streak, the SEC’s separate crypto custody framework proposal, and Citi lifting its 12-month BTC price target to $113,000. This week’s leveraged-ETP approval is a different kind of regulatory green light — it doesn’t move spot demand directly, but it adds another product category institutions and active traders can use to express views on crypto, which analysts generally read as a sign the asset class is continuing to mature in the eyes of U.S. regulators.
Why It Matters
Crypto’s regulatory trajectory keeps moving the same direction — toward more product variety and more institutional access — even as spot prices consolidate rather than break out. That mirrors the broader market backdrop, where Treasury yields sitting at multi-decade highs are shaping risk appetite across both equities and digital assets, and where Fed rate-hike odds remain a swing factor for how much further institutional money rotates into crypto-linked products. For investors tracking crypto-adjacent equities rather than the coins themselves, our Big Digital Energy (BGDE) fact sheet covers one of the smaller-cap names most directly levered to crypto infrastructure demand.
