Four of Wall Street’s biggest financial names are stepping directly into the AI infrastructure buildout: Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Blackstone have lined up $63 billion to finance Broadcom’s AI chips for Anthropic, the latest sign that banks — not just chipmakers — are becoming central financiers of the AI race.
Wall Street Is Now Underwriting the AI Buildout
A newly formed financing vehicle will buy Broadcom’s AI chips and lease them to Anthropic — deepening banks’ direct exposure to the AI infrastructure trade.
Inside the $63 Billion Deal
Bank of America, Blackstone, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley announced the financing Monday as part of a strategic compute-capacity agreement tied to Broadcom’s (AVGO) AI chips. Under the structure, a newly formed special purpose vehicle will buy Broadcom XPU AI accelerators and networking equipment, then lease that hardware to Anthropic, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027. Bank of America, Citi, and Morgan Stanley are arranging the first-lien portion of the financing, while Blackstone is the sole provider of the committed second-lien piece; Broadcom is also providing “residual value support” to the vehicle equal to the size of the first-lien financing. Blackstone President and COO Jon Gray called it a sign that “the rapidly growing demand for AI is creating an enormous opportunity to finance compute capacity at scale,” while Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said the deal shows capital is available to finance the AI buildout.
Why Broadcom Stock Keeps Climbing
The financing news landed alongside a fresh Wall Street endorsement: D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria upgraded Broadcom to Buy from Neutral and raised his price target to $400 from $350, roughly 22% above Monday’s close, arguing the stock trades at just 16 times 2027 earnings. KeyBanc separately reiterated an Overweight rating with a $575 target. Broadcom shares closed Tuesday at $342.33, up 4% ($13.16) on the combined news, extending gains from Monday’s rally tied to Anthropic’s IPO filing, and traded around $346.50 (+1.2%) in Wednesday’s premarket. The stock’s run underscores how directly Broadcom’s fortunes are now tied to Anthropic’s build-out plans — it’s simultaneously the AI lab’s hardware supplier and, through deals like this one, one of its financiers.
The Bigger Picture: Banks Are Becoming AI Infrastructure Players
This deal layers on top of disclosures in Anthropic’s own S-1 filing, which revealed Broadcom can separately lend Anthropic up to $42 billion — covering roughly a third of its $125.2 billion, five-year TPU computing lease. Together, the two arrangements show how much of the AI capital-spending boom is now being financed through complex, multi-party structures rather than straightforward equipment purchases. Bulls see this as evidence that institutional capital is lining up behind AI infrastructure at scale; skeptics worry that leveraged, vendor-linked financing could amplify the damage if AI spending growth ever slows — a concern that’s already shown up in chip-stock volatility this month, with Nvidia (NVDA) still down roughly 13% from its October record near $243 even as Micron and AMD extend the sector’s rebound.
Why It Matters
The deal lands in the same week as one of the heaviest stretches on the market calendar: the Fed delivers its rate decision this afternoon (see our Fed coverage), and Microsoft and Alphabet report earnings tonight, with Amazon following Thursday — see our previews for Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon. Oracle’s (ORCL) own cloud infrastructure boom, detailed in our recent earnings coverage, shows the same dynamic playing out across the industry: AI capital spending is colliding with questions about financing structure and eventual payoff.
