Bitcoin is holding above the $80,000 level that’s become the market’s line in the sand, even as spot Bitcoin ETFs post a third straight week of net redemptions and Ethereum funds bleed even faster. The pullback comes just as Wall Street heads into its biggest earnings week of the quarter and the Fed’s October 27-28 meeting moves back into focus after September’s surprise rate hike.
BTC Defends $80K Into a Pivotal Week
Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs are both bleeding cash for a third straight week, even as Strategy keeps buying and falling yields offer some support.
A Third Straight Week of ETF Outflows
Spot Bitcoin ETFs shed roughly $228 million last week, according to SoSoValue data, following a $681 million outflow the week before — bringing the October total to about $617 million in net redemptions. That’s a sharp reversal from September’s $2.65 billion and August’s $3.52 billion in net inflows. Ethereum ETFs fared even worse, losing about $320 million last week in their third consecutive week of outflows (following roughly $542 million the week before), with BlackRock’s ETHA fund alone accounting for about 93% of the category’s weekly outflow. The worst single day for both came Wednesday, October 14 — the same day September’s CPI report landed hotter than expected at 3.7% year over year, a reminder that crypto flows are still trading on the same macro headlines moving stocks and bonds.
Saylor Keeps Buying While Yields Ease
Not everyone is selling. Michael Saylor signaled on X that Strategy (MSTR) added to its Bitcoin stack again last week, after buying 250 BTC the week before to bring its total holdings to 848,250 BTC — worth more than $68.7 billion at current prices. Meanwhile, the macro backdrop has turned slightly friendlier for risk assets: the 10-year Treasury yield has eased to 5.08% from a monthly high of 5.36%, and the 2-year has slipped to 4.715% from 4.95%, a trend that has historically coincided with firmer Bitcoin prices. Technically, Bitcoin remains above its 50-day moving average inside a falling wedge pattern that chart watchers consider bullish — as long as the $80,000 floor holds. A break below that level would invalidate the setup and open the door to a retest of lower support.
Why It Matters
Crypto’s ETF outflows are landing in the same week that Wall Street faces its biggest earnings slate of the quarter, with Tesla, Meta, and Netflix among more than two dozen S&P 100 names reporting. If risk appetite sours further heading into the Fed’s October 27-28 meeting — where another hike is back on the table after last week’s back-to-back hot inflation prints — Bitcoin’s reaction at the $80,000 level could be an early signal for how equities handle the same macro pressure.
