Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s dominant chip foundry and the company that actually builds Nvidia’s GPUs, posted record Q3 2026 results and then raised the bar again: fourth-quarter revenue guidance implies roughly 58% year-over-year growth, driven almost entirely by AI accelerator demand that CEO C.C. Wei says still isn’t being fully met. The report lands in the same week Wall Street has been fretting over how the AI buildout is financed — and TSMC’s numbers argue the underlying demand itself remains very real.
TSMC’s AI Backlog Keeps Growing
Record Q3 revenue, a blowout Q4 guide, and a CEO who says demand “is extremely robust” — TSMC’s results are the clearest read yet on whether AI chip spending is holding up.
Record Quarter, Even Bigger Guide
TSMC’s Q3 2026 revenue came in at $46.7 billion, up 16.2% quarter over quarter and above the top end of its own guidance range. Gross margin held at 66.4%, down 1.3 percentage points from the prior quarter as the company ramps its new 2-nanometer (N2) process, while operating margin landed at 58.7% and return on equity hit 45.5%. Earnings per share were NT$29.43. For the fourth quarter, TSMC guided to revenue of $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion — roughly 58% higher than a year ago and about 14% above Q3 — with gross margin expected in a 65%-67% range. Full-year 2026 revenue growth is now tracking around 44% in U.S. dollar terms, and the company reiterated a $60 billion-$64 billion capital spending plan for the year, most of it going toward advanced-node and packaging capacity.
AI Demand Keeps Outrunning Supply
High-performance computing — TSMC’s catch-all for AI accelerators and the chips behind them — grew 22% quarter over quarter and now accounts for 68% of total revenue, with advanced nodes (7nm and below) making up 79% of wafer revenue. Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei was blunt about the state of demand: “Demand is extremely robust. We did not see any sign of slowdown,” he told analysts, adding that the supply-demand gap for leading-edge capacity is “still quite big.” Asked whether TSMC would revise its mid-to-high-50s% AI accelerator growth forecast for 2024-2029, Wei said “it probably will be higher.” CFO Wendell Huang echoed the capacity push: “We are accelerating everywhere, including in the U.S.” TSMC is now planning close to 20 fabs worldwide, expects N2 annual capacity to more than double in 2027, and is targeting volume production at its second Arizona fab for Q3 2027, alongside new 3-nanometer fabs in Tainan slated for 2027 and 2028.
Why It Matters for Nvidia and the AI Trade
TSMC doesn’t just supply Nvidia — it’s the only foundry currently capable of manufacturing Nvidia’s most advanced GPUs at scale, using the same CoWoS advanced-packaging capacity that’s been sold out for years. When TSMC says its AI backlog keeps growing and the supply gap is “still quite big,” that’s a direct read on how much room Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom’s custom AI chips still have to grow into available capacity — not just a TSMC story. It also lands as a useful counterweight to a nervous week for AI-infrastructure stocks: investors have been fixated on whether companies like CoreWeave can keep financing AI data-center buildouts on debt, and TSMC’s own numbers are about as close to ground truth on underlying chip demand as the market gets. That said, TSMC’s commentary on 2027 capital spending was more cautious than its tone on 2026, and Wei flagged that consumer and price-sensitive end markets are facing headwinds — a reminder that the AI segment and the rest of the chip business are no longer moving together.
